Application Process & Interviews at BHP

There are series of process placed along with all the instructions. I went through uploading a video interview as well as face to face interview conducted online.

I first had a virtual assessment, then after that I had a final interview with the principle engineer.

It was long and I received little communication between the stages. But the interviews were well structured.

I did an interview initially with a panel of interviewers. After that we did a group activity where we were assesed and then finally a speed interviewing process.

Lengthy process for graduates but satisfactory.

General interview process but did not reflecting much to technical skills or people skills.

Slow and too many levels

Usually you don't hear back from recruiter for a while. No constant communication

Took a long time to get a final answer. Was able to talk direct to a leader during interview, and had a positive experience where the interview seemed to be just as much for me as for the company. Due to COVID-19 restrictions at the time, the interview was virtual.

Smooth process

Had a video interview which was recorded and if we passed that round we would have an online interview with a manager based on the field you are in.

Took quite a long time to go through all the behavioral questions, and after that, long waiting process, interview, hear nothing in 1.5 month and suddenly receive the offer

Video assessment. 1x one-on-one interview with discipline. 8 months waiting around with limited communications.

Interview was straight forward and interactive with real life experience questions.

Assessments and interview process was good. Onboarding and HR communications was extremely poor

This was during COVID for me and I was also interstate so all of the process for me was online. With the application, online assessments, online recorded response video interview, and phone interview (the opportunity to ask questions about the company and job).

The process was easy and entirely online, consisting of video interviews, tests and a phone interview with a leader. The process was quite slow, with long gaps of silence between stages. The process started before, and finished after, most other competitiors.

Interview processes are standard to other companies

Questions related to past experience, few situational based, background related and technical ones.

Questions about how I would act in specific work situations

Main questions were about BHP's values.

Character questions.

My thoughts on recent BHP incidents (heritage site, harassment cases). Teamwork skills. Example of how I resolved a conflict situation.

Mostly situational based questions to see how we handle different situations and how we like to do things. For example, talk about a time you had to make a decision with little information and what was the course of action and what was the outcome.

Same classic interview behavioral question 101, and some data visualization experience /tools usage question. Nothing too technical

No technical. Value orientated questions to deem if you were a good fit as a person.

How did I and how will I manage certain situations, including being in a team, time management and others.

"Tell me about a time when" questions which relate to the company values.

How have I recently dealt with challenges/conflict?

Questions focused on safety, work ethic, thinking on the spot and working with people.

About my employment history, safety contribution examples, productivity examples, conflict management skills.

General questions about fit in the company, both culture and technical.

Myself, my career/education history and experience, my interest and passion both professionally and personally, my goals for next 5 years

Tell me about yourself. What made you choose the company?

Be clear with your goal and what value you will add to the organization after joining.

Be yourself.

Know about the company you are applying for and why you want to be there. Make sure you have a key focus on safety as it is so important in every role. Mostly just be yourself.

Have patience and be willing to apply for multiple roles.

Look through the company website and check our charter and values, be up-to-date on recent incidents that may be relevant to you or your role.

Be a people person

Revise/reflect on past experiences in past jobs and projects

Be true to themselves! by aligning their values to the business and see if they fit in. Also be honest about your experience and what you want to do during the interview. Don't be afraid to have a process plan for your future and share that.

Understand the role you are applying for. Be clear on what you hope to gain from the role and why you want the role.

Prepare a few scenarios or experiences you've had prior to the interview that you feel showcases your qualities and be prepared to discuss them through these situational based questions. Also, understand what the company does and try asking questions about it or incorporating them in your answer

Have some previous related industry work/internship experience and prepare for all the typical behavioral questions during AI online video interview as well as online f2f. Try to make a good impression is really important.

Think of scenarios where you have demonstrated company values. If you have prior technical experience, it is good to relate these.

Be honest and ready with some of your works that they are proud of and could be relatable in a fast paced and time critical working environment.

Demonstrating a strong sense of curiosity in your application and interview can set you apart – show eagerness to learn and ask insightful questions about the role and the company. Also, highlight your adaptability and flexibility, as these are valued traits in our dynamic work environment. Prepare to share examples from your past experiences that showcase your problem-solving skills, ability to learn from challenges, and successes in teamwork. This approach will show that you're not only well-prepared but also a great fit for our company's culture.

Understand company values, come prepped with responses to generic questions in the SMART format

It is important to understand the company values, as they are looking for someone who will fit and succeed in the company, not just someone with good grades. In the interviews, be friendly and show your excitement, as you'll likely be asked why you applied.

Expect HR to take a long time

Be familiar with the BHP Charter Values and what BHP does. Also have examples of when you overcame adversity, whether personally or professionally

Emotional and social intelligence is just as important as technical knowledge

Learning the company charter values and prepare specific examples for discussion.
