Mostly grad-level work, sometimes involving first drafts of significant documents, but usually background research, doc review, preparing annexures, etc.

I'm regularly drafting pleadings, regulatory submissions and client advices. My team has a good spread of transactional advisory, litigation and regulatory work so I get to try my hand at everything.

Pros and cons of working at Gilbert + Tobin

Pros

  • Exposure to high-profile clients and really brilliant lawyers to learn from.

  • Working on interesting and challenging projects. Learning from team members. Ability to work on pro bono projects.

  • Support structures and access to training materials. The people that work at G+T are the best lawyers in the industry and are very invested in the growth of the junior lawyers.

  • High level of responsibility and self-determination.

  • The best pay, very nice people, and the opportunity to progress and obtain greater responsibility faster compared to industry standard.

Cons

    • The hours can be long and client expectations are very high but we achieve incredible outcomes and are very well remunerated.

    • It's easy to sometimes get swept up in work and lose touch with your personal life.

    • Sometimes, due to the nature of our work, it can be very stressful - but this is something that applies to all firms.

    • Inconsistent workflow (may be typical of the legal industry).

    • Currently, lack of mentorship from senior levels.
