What can we offer you?

Our graduate program is a priority for us because we recognise that today’s law graduates are tomorrow’s leaders of the firm. Over the years, the program has proven to be highly successful – many of our current partners completed their graduate years with us.

As a Law Graduate, you will be a part of a 12-month program that includes three, four-month rotations in our Melbourne Office. During your graduate year you will experience:

  • A combination of on-the-job training and support in completing Practical Legal Training.
  • A comprehensive induction with the national graduate cohort which lays the foundation for the year ahead.
  • The opportunity to gain experience in several of the firm’s practice areas.
  • An extensive support network including a buddy, a mentor and supervising partner to provide guidance and support throughout the year.
  • Regular learning opportunities through our Elevate program, designed to develop our graduates and provide them with the skills and expertise to excel.
  • Opportunities to participate in Pro Bono, Industry group and Smarter Law initiatives
  • Ongoing feedback, both formal and informal.
  • The opportunity to immerse yourself in our great culture and have fun!

Smarter Law

We’re renowned for our Smarter Law approach. Smarter Law means we look beyond the status quo to think differently and find solutions. This includes enabling technology, challenging business models, innovative pricing and creative resourcing.

We aim to strike a healthy balance between working hard and maintaining a high level of professionalism with having fun. By having happy and engaged people, we ensure our clients also have a great experience. Our collegial culture, shaped by our Hallmarks, guides the way everyone at Hall & Wilcox works every day.

Our inclusive culture enables us to recognise and celebrate individual differences and create a workplace environment in which both individuals and groups feel welcome, respected and valued. As a law graduate this heavily depends on which rotation you are in. Some practice areas are busier than others

Pros and cons of working at Hall & Wilcox

Pros

  • The firm has wonderful mentors who care for the professional growth and personal well-being of team members. Everyone's contributions are highly valued.

  • Super structured, comprehensive and continuous.

  • I never have to work overtime – the firm is committed to preserving work/life balance.

  • Even as a graduate, I can work from home. I generally spend 1-2 days at home, which is the norm for most employees (obviously some more, some less, I just prefer to be in office).

  • The workplace culture is very inclusive, and I really feel like part of a team.

Cons

    • The salary could be higher in comparison to other graduate cohorts.

    • The very occasional disconnect between partners and lawyers about workflows and opportunities for work.

    • Some teams are better than others at training and getting grads involved.

    • The entire office hotdesks (there are no private offices) and sometimes getting a seat in the office can be tricky.

    • From a graduate perspective, progression in the firm is not yet clear.
