About the role and team

Our Statutory Insurance NSW/ACT - Workers' Compensation section has approximately 7 team members based in our Canberra office and forms part of our broader Statutory Insurance practice with around 117 people across NSW and the ACT.

The successful candidate will:

  • be based in our Canberra office;
  • join a non-rotating graduate position; and
  • learn and gain experience in the defence of personal injury claims, in the context of Workers' Compensation in the ACT and Commonwealth (Comcare) jurisdictions. We encourage applications from junior lawyers who have experience in commercial litigation and/or insurance litigation (particularly Workers’ Compensation), however this is not essential. You must have a keen interest in developing a career in defendant insurance law.

Key responsibilities

You will be involved in a variety of matters, under appropriate supervision, including:

  • defending state statutory class and common law claims arising in the ACT jurisdiction;
  • advising licensees under the Commonwealth workers compensation (Comcare) scheme;
  • advising national insurers, self-insurers and boutique insurers on issues concerning the ACT scheme and with the ACT regulator;
  • running claims and litigation in a variety of Courts, including the ACT Magistrates’ Court, ACT Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court of Australia; and
  • acting on workers’ compensation recoveries in construction site matters, involving employers, head contractors and multiple subcontractors.

About our Graduate Program

Our graduate program is a priority for us because we recognise that today’s law graduates are tomorrow’s leaders of the firm. Over the years our graduate program has proven to be highly successful - many of our current partners completed their graduate year with us!

As a law graduate this heavily depends on which rotation you are in. Some practice areas are busier than others

Pros and cons of working at Hall & Wilcox

Pros

  • The firm has wonderful mentors who care for the professional growth and personal well-being of team members. Everyone's contributions are highly valued.

  • Super structured, comprehensive and continuous.

  • I never have to work overtime – the firm is committed to preserving work/life balance.

  • Even as a graduate, I can work from home. I generally spend 1-2 days at home, which is the norm for most employees (obviously some more, some less, I just prefer to be in office).

  • The workplace culture is very inclusive, and I really feel like part of a team.

Cons

    • The salary could be higher in comparison to other graduate cohorts.

    • The very occasional disconnect between partners and lawyers about workflows and opportunities for work.

    • Some teams are better than others at training and getting grads involved.

    • The entire office hotdesks (there are no private offices) and sometimes getting a seat in the office can be tricky.

    • From a graduate perspective, progression in the firm is not yet clear.
