Who we are

Johnson Winter & Slattery is a corporate law firm like no other. Started by three lawyers who wanted to do things differently, we've grown to become one of Australia's leading independent firms with offices in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. Major international and Australian leading businesses, investment funds and government agencies rely on us for high quality legal advice across all areas of corporate law.

About the Team

Based in Sydney, the JWS marketing team supports the national firm across all areas of marketing: business development, communications and design. The team is close knit, supportive and high performing, focused on actively contributing to the firm's success.

About the Role

An opportunity exists for a Law or Marketing university student to join our Sydney office on a casual basis. Supporting the Marketing and Business Development team, you will have the opportunity to get exposure to all aspects of the BDM function and support the team on projects including: drafting content on firm updates (client-related and firm-wide strategic initiatives) for release internally and externally, Practitioner CV management, undertaking industry, client, and firm research projects, database management; assistance with the preparation and delivery of client events.

Our Sydney office is a welcoming and collaborative office that fosters a supportive and high-performing environment. This is an exciting opportunity to join a tight-knit secretarial community where everyone supports each other and you can develop long-lasting relationships over coffee, team lunches, and Friday drinks.

About You

You obviously have plenty of technical aptitude and previous relevant experience, but there is much more to you. You:

  • work well under pressure, meet your deadlines and excel working autonomously;
  • have strong communication skills and you aren't afraid to use them, internally and externally;
  • have the ability to work min. 2 days per week (Mon-Fri) between the hours of 8:00am – 6:00pm on a regular basis
  • have a genuine interest in understanding how a BDM function runs within a law firm; and
  • take a collaborative, positive and energetic approach to everything you do.

We are committed to creating an inclusive workplace, where our differences are also our strength.  If you are interested in this role and our firm (but don’t necessarily meet every single requirement in this advertisement), we encourage you to contact us to discuss potential opportunities.

Working at JWS

We are not like the other corporate law firms.

When you ask our people why they choose to work for us, the most common response is “because of the people.”

We value ‘humanity’ and ‘collaboration’ over everything else. We care about the wellbeing of our people and will invest time in understanding your objectives so that we can support you throughout your career.

We believe it’s this focus on people that has seen our firm grow rapidly to become one of Australia’s leading independent law firms.

Why?

Experience like no other

We will put you at the forefront of the corporate world. We work with our clients on their most complex and business critical legal work – it's what we do best.

Thrive with us

With us, you will not be held back. Our people take on the work that reflects their ability, not their job title. You will have more opportunity to make an impact, have your ideas heard and step up in your career.

In it together

We pride ourselves on being down to earth, approachable, but always high performing. We have worked hard to create a culture where people look out for each other. Our ethos is: “we’re in it together” and it’s what we live by.

Focused on people, not numbers

When people come first, numbers take the backseat.

We have left billing and time targets in the past, where they should be. We still record our time, but we know that it does not define the value of our work. Working with us means you will not have to compete with your peers and your success will be measured by outcomes, not hours.

We do this because it drives better results. Our people focus on the quality of their work, growing their skills and looking out for each other.

Our benefits are designed to help our employees manage all their lifestyle needs and to reward them for being part of the team. From financial rewards to health and wellbeing, outstanding L&D opportunities, flexibility and innovation.

As a graduate at JWS your graduate day-to-day responsibilities include legal research, drafting advice, performing due diligence or discovery tasks and general matter management work.

My daily responsibilities differ but I'm being given work I know I can handle. Some of the tasks are a bit menial to complete but overall it hasn't been anything overtly challenging yet.

Pros and cons of working at Johnson Winter Slattery

Pros

  • You are given the opportunity to try many different areas of law without being confined to a specific team.

  • I like that there is a true non-siloed approach for graduates so that you can experience all practice areas. Despite being a mid-sized firm we do a lot of what would be considered "top-tier" work for interesting and multinational clients. There is a very hands-on approach here and I am able to have direct access to senior practitioners. The hours are good.

  • Flexible and understanding culture, great people, diverse and engaging work

  • We don't do rotations so you're able to work in a variety of different areas and can ask to work on specific things you are interested in. Everyone is lovely to work with and are very accommodating and flexible.

Cons

    • Sometimes it is difficult to get consistent and ongoing work.

    • The non-siloed approach comes with its challenges in managing different commitments across different practice groups as well as searching out your own work. If you have a can-do attitude and good time management skills you can overcome these challenges.
