Promotion is not easy. You need to demonstrate that you can perform at the "next level" (ie. The experience level above you), but that is not a guarantee of promotion. All potential promotes are aligned and discussed at the senior partner level. This should be celebrated though- it is a way for the firm to ensure the consultant is mentally, emotionally and intellectually prepared with the increased responsibilities and challenges experienced when promoted. It is also a control mechanism to ensure management and leadership remains strong.

The promotion process is quite methodical. Project performance is graded, and promotions assess you agianst those grades to make a decision on moving up.
Promotion can be very quick (~1 year) to start considering we only have 6 grades to partner. There's clear opportunities to step up and take on more responsibility with firm-building activities (e.G. Social impact, marketing, recruitment).
