Please tell us about promotion possibilities and fill us in on what it takes to move up the ranks.
Promotion and career progression is non-transparent and the rotational program impedes on the potential schedules

definitely room for promitions, although seems very time based for first few rungs of positions
Graduate, Sydney - 28 Aug 2024
Graduate program in reality runs for 2.5 Years, where there would be no promotions. Further than that, there can be a lot of politics and market dependency.

They have changed the grad pathway this year after I started, so now anyone who starts gets promoted automatically after 2.5 Years, with no promotion opportunities before that. We have been told this is a firmwide change to standardize promotion across the firm. It is a bit frustrating that it doesn't matter how hard you work there isn't any recognition, so it sort of disincentivizes hard work.

Promotion appears to be locked in to tenure, i.E. One year, two years, not based on performance or knowledge.
Graduate, Perth - 12 Aug 2024
When we applied to the graduate program, we were promised a (pretty much guaranteed) promotion after 2 years, however, just before we hit our 2-year mark at the firm, senior leadership has said that this 2 year period has been extended by 6 months to 2.5 Years and the promotion is no longer automatic. Would have preferred if this would only affect future years cohorts. To move up the ranks, have a high utilisation and form connections with the right people.

KPMG recently invited all of the consultants (entry level) in the consulting division into a call (there were 300-400) and advised that they had changed the previous 2-year graduate pathway to senior consultant, to 2.5 years - effective immediately. I was 5 months away from the 2-year mark, and now have to wait an additional 6 months to get promoted. They have also seemingly removed the ability to get promoted more quickly based on merit. The relatively fast 2-year promotion to senior consultant was the one thing going for KPMG; now that too has been removed. It is embarrassing that they are nickle and dime-ing grads who are already overworked and heavily underpaid. My colleagues are equally as infuriated. If I had my time again applying for graduate roles in uni, I would have not touched KPMG Consulting with a 10-foot pole.

Our promotions are very systematic. There are annual promotion cycles, and specific criteria to hit. Each person is assigned a mentor to assist them with this process, and individuals request formal feedback on projects that can be used to evaluate performance come review time.

Have to go beyond expectations for your role, show initiative, think about others rather than just yourself.
Graduate, Perth - 08 Nov 2023
Up to the upper management level (Manger and onwards) it is just a matter of time and experience. I think beyond upper management is more about the individual's merit and capabilities.
Graduate, Melbourne - 08 Nov 2023
I haven't completed the grad program yet so I wouldn't know yet.
Graduate, Sydney - 08 Nov 2023
There is a set promotion ladder, not entirely clear how to move up and it can depend on the person. From what I have seen, some people get the first promotion a year in, can take others up to 3 years. Being a national team it may impact who goes up as well.

Seems relatively easy to progress up until assistant manager
Graduate, Adelaide - 08 Nov 2023
Changing the graduate program to no longer include a promotion to senior con gives me no sense of career progression.
Graduate, Canberra - 08 Nov 2023
The career promotion opportunities at a big 4 are fantastic as you are constantly moving through the cycle looking to get promoted. Getting promoted involves hitting metrics and producing quality work on all engagements as well as upskilling yourself and contributing additional value to the firm.

Annual goal setting
Graduate, Adelaide - 06 Nov 2023
It is very competitive to get promotions at our company
Graduate, Canberra - 06 Nov 2023
My company has quite a structured pathway for the first 2 years which is nice and I appreciate. Beyond that I think the opportunity for growth within the company and outside (if I left) are quite good.
Graduate, Brisbane - 06 Nov 2023
Promotion paths are laid out in general terms for employees with goals and expectations of each level. Provides targets for employees and allows them to grow as an individual not just be a better worker.
Graduate, Sydney - 03 Nov 2023
There is a clear career progression within the firm
