What's your job about?

Mineral Resources is a leading mining services company that also operates iron ore and lithium projects. I am currently a Graduate Accountant rotating through the different parts of the finance team. This has currently taken me from the Corporate Finance team to the Lithium Management accounting team and most recently to Financial Planning & Analysis.

As a graduate what I do has changed through each rotation so far and has a lot to do with what part of the year it is. In Corporate Finance, I worked on group level accounting and external reporting at the end of the financial year. In the Management Accounting team, I got to work on things that were much more specific to individual projects such as monthly reconciliations and internal monthly reporting.

What's your background?

I studied Accounting and Finance at UWA and while at there I did a few of vacation/internship programs at different places in Perth to get a feel for what I wanted to do after university.

I first learnt of MinRes in one of my units at university and I started following the company then. I was really interested in the mining industry and so in my final year when I saw the MinRes graduate advert on LinkedIn I decided to apply.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

I think anyone who is open to learning about accounting and finance could. Having majored in accounting at university really helps, though. A big part of my graduate program with Mineral Resources is to complete the Chartered Accountants Program (CA) which supports me.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

The best part of my job has been getting to interact with the different teams within the business. The nature of the finance team means it interacts with all parts of the business, from the mines to the different support functions. Getting to rotate around the finance team is a great learning experience and lets you get different perspectives on the business.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

1. Get involved with different clubs and societies during university! They are a great way to meet new and like-minded people. For me, this really helped to make the university a lot more fun and was incredibly helpful when applying for different vacation and grad programs.
2. I would recommend that students use vacation programs and internships to get some practical experience so they can have an idea of what they are interested in professionally after university.
3. Research the industries and companies you are considering applying to. Knowing about what companies do will make it a lot easier when it comes to deciding where to apply and the application process.
