Your new role
We are seeking a highly motivated individual who is passionate about WHS/EHS to join our exciting and unique Graduate/Cadet Program. This is a great opportunity for the right candidate to grow professionally and personally through various rotations across our business. This is an entry-level role for someone who wants to jumpstart their career and develop skills in risk management, internal auditing, and be involved in the development of EHS policies and procedures.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Partnering with front-line supervisors and workers to understand how work is done and how variability and context impacts on safe operations
- Working with operations on the effective use of EHS tools such as Risk Assessment and Critical Control Verification
- Providing improvement guidance and support corrective action development and continuous improvement opportunities and recording findings/actions in the data management system.
- Participating in daily safety talks, discussing site hazards and risks and facilitating use of the data management system
- Supporting the investigation of significant EHS non-conformances or incidents, and identify and communicate corrective actions
- Providing insight on process hazards, Safe Work Procedures and Job Safety Analysis.
- Supporting the management of workers’ compensation, injury management, and return-to-work and rehabilitation policy and processes, where required
Essential Criteria:
- Ability to work effectively with a broad range of individuals at multiple levels
- Ability to prioritise tasks and achieve agreed timelines
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, written communications and presentation skills
- Good computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
- Driver’s licence
Desirable criteria:
- Tertiary qualification in Work Health and Safety (WHS) or equivalent desirable but not essential. We can provide training to the right candidate
- Knowledge and understanding of WHS legislation

Through careful analysis, I make data-driven decisions to enhance machine performance and meet production targets
My roll as a graduate Trading / Commercial representative consists of providing support to our trading team and managers, managing vendors and sourcing new business.
Everyday changes, I'm learning each single job / task in the yard, so I will say responsable for my own learning and development.

The most enjoyable experience about working for Sims Metal is the positive work environment that surrounds all aspects of the business. I find everyone incredibly supportive of each other and generally happy to be at work.
The best thing about Sims is the people you work with. Everyone is very approachable, professional, and helpful. I can go to anyone in the company and I know they will assist to their best ability.
You are able to be exposed to so many aspects of engineering in business, from designing and installing machinery to operating and maintaining it.
It is particularly satisfying to know that the job I am doing is environmentally friendly, and it gives me a sense of fulfillment to be a part of such an endeavor.
Cons
Not so much the 'worst' thing, but I would love to see a more diverse range of people working on site. All office and admin rolls appear to be diverse; however, yard roles tend to be dominated by men. I understand this is primarily due to the nature of the work and that it can be hard to diversify when the industry is so male-dominated. I think that there is potential for a few changes to be made to make a more welcoming space for women to want to apply for yard positions. I have noticed that there has been effort toward this, and I greatly appreciate that. I look forward to seeing how Sims adapts and grows further in the future.
So many challenges in all aspects, especially planning and organizing.
Reporting processes can be challenging during report periods e.g. EOM and EOFY
In my area of work, Learning and Development, can be very challenging to implement global standardised processes and global training because every region, state, and even on a yard level are doing processes differently.
Sims has become a global large-scale operation over the years but maybe not enough time has been making Sims more unified in some areas.
