Application Process & Interviews at William Buck

Applied, had an interview, heard back within a couple of weeks, commenced a month long internship, stayed in weekly contact with recruitment after completing my internship, month after internship was offered an undergraduate position

I had two interview firstly with an a senior accountant and a member of the p&c team and my second interview was with a partner and member of p&c team. both interviews went well, i was asked a range of questions about my personality, experience and knowledge as well as tested briefly on basic accounting principles.

Strong hiring process, with a two week turnaround between application and first interview. my process was longer than expected, but that was because i wasn't the right fit for one of the other departments and so they tried to place me in a better fit (cf). i appreciated that they were willing to accomodate my strengths, career objectives and interests, which really impressed me and gave me comfort around pursuing a career at the firm.

Applied via seek, completed online assessments as well as interviews and was called in for two interviews. the assessments were typical psychometric tests - which we were eventually walked through and explained what we did well/wrong etc etc.

The hiring process was phenomenal. the recruiters always answered your queries and if they could not answer immediately made an effort to get back to you within a timely manner.

It was a quick seamless process on my end. i applied; they liked my application, so i did some testing. got asked to do an interview and was able to change the date to an earlier time to accommodate to my upcoming trip to korea, i then had the interview with frank and garth and got a call back on the same day for another one from frank. i then came in the next day to meet with chris and laurie. 2 days later i got a call saying i got the job, just before i left for my trip.

My interview process was quick and simple with little to no downtime between decision-making. after sending an email to hr, the talent acquisition advisor was quick to fast-track initial assessments and an interview. my interview was friendly and unformulaic - that is, i did not feel i needed to read a script to express myself as my interviewers and environment were approachable and supportive. after my interview, i received correspondence on the same day that i had the job, which was a relief compared to the weeks i have waited for other firms.

There was an initial cognitive function assessment. this was followed by two interviews one with p&c and another with people from the division i would be working in.

I think the hiring process is good but i also don't think i can comment as much as my experience was different to what the standard process is.

My own interview process was very smooth and involved as little stress as possible. my interview was a very friendly environment and the hr team at the time were very easy to deal with. i do think there has been a bit of a struggle to find good new staff in the past few years but again, that is more of an industry issue, not specific to wb and i see management implementing programs such as the intern program to try and combat that.

The interview process went well

My interview process was different and very fast tracked. i had 2 interviews in one day as i was heading overseas in the next few days.

Very straightforward and non-intimidating.

I had two interviews, the first one online followed by an interview in the office. i also had to complete online psychometric testing.

Applied online or through an agency. phone call, then zoom interview, online testing and then proceeding to an in person interview with a director and principal.

Straight forward yet thorough.

Application, followed by an online recorded interview - asking questions such as "why do you want to work here", "why do you want to work in this field"; online problem-solving tests - e.g. finding patterns in objects, tests that you cannot really study for; and lastly a second interview focused on getting to know you, habits, interests etc.

I had two (2) different interviews with william; an online and an in-person interview. the interview processes were clear and easy.

Interview process was great, much better than other places as you got to talk to an actual interviewer on the phone and in person.

Interview process was smooth, i was made to feel comfortable to discuss my achievements, education, and interests. i was also told a bit about the firm and the work i'd be doing. following my interview i received a call that afternoon offering me the position.

Questions such as what were my biggest failures and how did i respond from them. what is my biggest achievement. what are things i can take from my previous employment and apply here.

Questions around main interests, why i chose finance, what i like to do in my spare time.

What does work life balance mean to me? what do i do in my spare time. what school did i go to and what did i like/dislike about school. what are my greatest strengths and areas for improvement.

Tell us about yourself? why did you want to work at william buck? have you read our values? if so, which one do you most align with. what makes you suitable for the position?

What's the toughest experience i've gone through? how do i feel my degree in design will assist me in r&i? what are moments where you've had to manage someone's expectations? what is a moment where you've had to show empathy in your role?

My interview questions were relatively general as a graduate, more-so assessing my personality and making sure i was a good fit for the firm. i was thankful that there wasn't a focus on technical skills and knowledge and, while confident in my abilities, it isn't always easy remembering every piece of accounting and taxation laws and standards for random trivia.

I was asked about my studies. my past experience, my interests and my goals for the future.

I hadn't started my degree yet at the time of my interview so my questions mostly revolved around my roles and responsibilities at my previous jobs, my strengths and weaknesses and things i like to do in my spare time.

They asked about my education, my interests, work life balance as that is an important aspect of working with my employer, and why did i choose audit.

The questions were largely focused on why i wanted to work with the firm, what my experience was, what i wanted to be doing, how i manage my time and my hobbies outside of work.

Why do you want to work at this firm? what is your work experience both in industry and generally?

Questions such as why i am interested in accounting and audit specifically, as well as various behavioral questions that required me to apply an experience i had personally had.

Why business advisory? why william buck? how would your friends describe you?

What appealed to me about the role.

What previous experience i had, how i found the job, why i was interested and what would i bring to the team.

Really read the job specifications and prepare detailed answers based on what the role requires. think about the context of the agency, and what might be important to them.

I prepared by looking up common interview questions, writing out a response from my experience and perspective and memorizing it so i was prepared upon being asked in the interview.

Get an understanding of what william buck does and its unique value proposition to the mid-market (a whole firm approach that specialises in all areas of advisory services - cf, business advisory, restructuring, insolvency, wealth, tax, r&d) and the clients it services (mid-market, start-ups, tech).

Absolutely, be yourself and don't be shy. the partners and hr involved in the process are very human and all they ask from you in return is to be human as well. show your personality because culture is at the centrepiece of the profound success at william buck.

This probably sounds corny at this point but if you're already here searching the company then you're on the right track. make sure to remain true to yourself but also be professional. you already have all the knowledge you just need the confidence to answer the questions in a succinct manner.

Do a bit of research on the people who are hiring you and have some questions ready for them. understand the position you're actually applying for, and if you're unsure ask and show initiative. most importantly be yourself. from what i've gauged in this office is they'd much rather hire someone who's a good person whose skills are not quite there yet than hire someone who's nasty but the best at what they do.

The best tip i have, while cliche, is to simply express who you are as a person. i feel that during my interview, the firm was not looking for mindless monotone drones that couldn't hold an unscripted conversion. i was, and still am, introverted, and sometimes struggle holding a conversation. however, i believe that being honest with your interviewers and more importantly yourself will better express why you would be a good candidate for a graduate position - you are not applying for a senior or management level position, you are applying as a novice with no assumed experience or knowledge.

I would recommended doing some research into the company and understand their value to see if you would be a cultural fit.

Utilise the star method of answering interview questions.

I think candidates should just prepare my being themselves, having some answers ready or scenarios where they have shown initiative or excelled and prepare their skills or best attributes that they could apply to the job.

Be yourself and approach everything with an open mind and a smile on your face. positivity and friendliness go a long way.

Just be yourself is the best tip i can give. don't go in being someone who you are not.
