DISR is a Government department that has major focuses on building diversity. As a female with a CALD background, I've not felt like a minority.
Graduate, Melbourne - 08 Nov 2023
They have many diverse networks and reconciliation action plans, they also admit diversity remains a problem.
Graduate, Canberra - 30 Oct 2023
DISR's diversity initiatives are run off the back of the tireless efforts of volunteers who are in the Inclusion Networks. They are rarely recognised for their work, almost never given adequate time for the extra roles they take on, and constantly fight uphill battles with the inclusion team to have things run by people who are paid for that work. DISR takes advantage of marginalised communities.

This department cares about representation and

As a whole there are more women than men in the APS which has been a slow shift. plenty of different leave types available. DISR has its own groups for diversity and gender you can join.
Graduate, Canberra - 30 Oct 2023
I feel like there is a good balance between men and woman in the workplace and particularly leadership/management roles. I wouldn't say I am in the position to comment on the rest but overall, I think the culture supports a diverse workforce.
Graduate, Canberra - 24 Oct 2023
As a Queer person, there's a lot being attempted. Definitely helped by the existence of the Pride Network at the department.
Graduate, Canberra - 23 Oct 2023
DISR has extreme diversity reflected in its workforce and inclusive culture, which is likely why results are so fantastic.
Graduate, Canberra - 23 Oct 2023
Its better than most places, there is a genuine effort here to be better, I have met some people who are openly living as their authentic selves. But there are still deficits, one that comes to mind is the lack of transition medical leave for my gender diverse colleagues.
Graduate, Canberra - 23 Oct 2023
A range of inclusive activities, such as celebration and social events, awareness day observations, are available. Childcare priority access is also excellent. Support for women, ethnic minorities and LGBT staff is predominantly facilitated by the relevant staff networks i.e. dependent on the delivery of activities by the current committees. The company is not very diverse and highly privileged. Talks amongst diverse colleagues have indicated that many feel they are not equally valued in job interview panels or considered for promotion to executive levels.
Graduate, Canberra - 08 Dec 2022
The company has active work areas committed to improving diversity. Policies also enable inclusive practices and events. Leave arrangements also show great respect to those of diverse cultural backgrounds, and parents.
Graduate, Canberra - 07 Dec 2022
Diversity and representation are reasonably strong. Leave is supported, as well as having a variety of committees and groups to support diverse people.
Graduate, Canberra - 06 Dec 2022
No issues. The department does a lot to support those in need, and those who have historically been left out of conversations.

The fact you've forgotten people with disabilities says everything

Great work in this space.
Graduate, Canberra - 17 Mar 2021
The department talks the talk and mostly walks the walk. There are good child care and maternity leave provisions, diversity is explicitly noted in recruitment materials, and the employee diversity networks are listened to.
Midlevel, Canberra - 17 Mar 2021
There are strong communities for diverse groups in the department. Membership is encouraged, with support from executives who work as champions for various groups. Recruitment has affirmative action opportunities, and is flexible to individual needs. There is child care available nearby, and maternity leave also, with details in the Enterprise Agreement. Diversity is apparent across the department, but is lesser at higher levels.

What does your company do to attract applicants from less privileged backgrounds?
Inclusive language and diverse staff stock images are used on websites and in communication platforms, however this does not reflect upper management and senior staff in the organisation.

I believe they are very encouraging. They have a traineeship program that focuses on indigenous Australians and people with disabilities. The people I know seem to come from a wide range of backgrounds.
Graduate, Canberra - 30 Jan 2017
There is an Indigenous intern program, Pride and Womens' networks, no restrictions on age or graduation date for grads, and the interview and application process for the grad program is very heavy on the importance of diversity.
