Put theory into practice and work with an experienced and engaging team, where you will be a key member and work on the development, production and sustainment of Mission Equipment and Test Systems (hardware and software).
Reporting to the Lead Systems Engineer, you will facilitate the production of electronic Mission Systems in Australia and serially produced items fulfil functional baselines and meet quality standards.
As the Systems Engineer, you can anticipate some of your day-to-day tasks to include:
- Define, develop, and document test procedures for Test Systems intended for production activities;
- Design and develop hardware adaptations and software programs for Test Systems;
- Interpret existing test specifications or develop new specifications from technical data for electronic Mission Systems;
- Commission new Test Systems into the production environment and assist in training production staff in the use of Test Systems;
- Write documentation supporting the development and commissioning of Test Systems;
- Oversee and track design activities in conjunction with Design Engineers and Suppliers;
- Define, develop and assist with Mission System Verification and Validation test campaigns; and
- Document and communicate all development and V&V related findings and decisions.

The Electronic Solutions Systems Engineering team works in partnership with the Engineering, Project and Management teams for the design, implementation, testing and commissioning for a range of military programs.

The experience and skillset best suited to this role includes:
- Entry level Systems Engineer with a few years’ experience or recent Graduate;
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant Engineering field such Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics or in a related discipline;
- Experience working with electronic hardware including Printed Circuit Board Assemblies and Cable Assemblies would be desirable;
- Experience with programming, preferably in Python would be desirable;
- Knowledge of systems engineering processes such as requirement, interface analysis, specification development and management and Verification and Validation activity coordination would be desirable;
- Ability to work collaboratively with multi-disciplined team of engineering and technical staff;
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to resolve complex problems and issues;
- Ability to travel internationally and interstate, when required; and
- Must hold or be eligible to obtain an Australian Government Security Clearance (must hold Australian Citizenship).

As I was lucky enough to place on the concept design team with only a lead engineer and a senior engineer, the two of them gave me significant responsibilities and I was lucky enough to get one-on-one tutelage from them. However, other graduates have not been so lucky.
As a design engineering graduate, I have had two key projects. One of which Rheinmetall held design responsibility. This project involved day-to-day activities such as design brainstorming, 3D modelling (CAD), project meetings, researching current technologies to fit your applications, etc. On the other project, we were not the design responsible body (meaning we were contracting the design work to an external body). However, we have the responsibility to provide our customer with quality that lives up to our standards. In this project, my day-to-day responsibilities include supplier meetings, customer meetings, completing and managing FMEA's (noted issues list), completing action items that come out of the FMEA and occasional site visits.
Workload isn't overwhelming but it doesn't feel like I'm doing nothing either. There are lots of small milestones, to make me feel like I've accomplished something.

Requires a 4-month wait for NV-1 security clearance to get into the meat and potatoes of my role.
The lack of official registered training and engineering tools - advanced FEA software, calculation tools such as Python/Matlab.
