Emily Sturt-Tzeegankoff

I enjoy making clients feel special and providing a safe space where they can relax from everyday life.

What course did you study at TAFE SA? When did you graduate?

I commenced Certificate II in Salon Assistant early 2021 and completed it later that year.

Why did you choose to study this course?

I chose this course to gain the basic skills of someone entering the Hair and Beauty industry and gain employment.

What job/industry are you employed in now?

I am now a first-year apprentice at a hair salon, reaching the beginning of my second year shortly.

How did your training with TAFE SA help you to get where you are now?

TAFE SA provided me with the core skills of salon assisting in a steady paced, enjoyable learning environment – giving me the knowledge and confidence I needed to pursue my first job, in the hair & beauty industry. From communication skills to blow-dries, to workplace health and safety, Certificate II was a safe space for hands on learning with clients under supervision of knowledgeable lecturers.

Can you describe a typical workday?

My typical workday consists of many tasks that ensure the salon runs smoothly.  Greeting clients, preparing for their appointment, and providing beverages on offer.  I’ll often commence a service (e.g., cut and blow-dry client) at the basin if the senior stylist is running behind on schedule.  I assist in colour application, foil removal, and offer treatments and massage, as well as blow-dry and styling with thermal tools.  My other responsibilities include washing towels and capes, cleaning tools between services, and keeping the salon clutter free and tidy, such as sweeping hair off floors.

Suppose a student was considering a career in your industry. What would you advise them to study? Are there any soft skills that would be beneficial for them to develop? Should they pursue any sort of work experience?

I would highly recommend studying Certificate II to gain an insight of what the industry is like before committing to a Certificate III or apprenticeship.  It’s a great entry level course that allows you to ease into the future role.

Learning exceptional customer service, communication skills, and working as a part of a team are vital for many job roles that this course offers in a fun way with many practical assignments.

What do you love most about your job? What kind of tasks do you enjoy doing the most?

I enjoy making clients feel special and providing a safe space where they can enjoy their experience and relax from everyday life.  I love giving treatments and scalp massages that always almost put them to sleep! It brings me joy knowing that I am a valued team player amongst my peers and a friendly face for clients to talk to.

Which three pieces of advice would you give to a current TAFE SA student?

  • Never hesitate to ask your lecturers for help – confide in them your weak points so they can guide you on how to overcome them.
  • If studies or personal life are becoming challenging, or if you’re an apprentice/trainee that is having difficulties in the workplace, TAFE SA have counsellors on campus that can offer you a safe space to release, and help you come up with solutions to make your time at TAFE SA easier.
  • Remember that TAFE SA is a learning environment and that it is ok to make mistakes – this is the place to make mistakes and to learn from them to enhance your skills and character growth.
