What course did you study at TAFE SA? When did you graduate? 

Certificate III in Horticulture- a majority was studied with TAFE SA with just the last semester with another RTO

Why did you choose to study this course? 

I chose to study this course because of my love for plants and the natural environment

What job/industry are you employed in now?  

I am employed as a Horticulturalist at the Botanic Gardens 

How did your training with TAFE SA help you to get where you are now?

My training at TAFE SA was outstanding. The lecturers were extremely knowledgeable and the purpose built campus was a perfect learning environment 

Can you describe a typical workday? 

A typical work day involves checking in with our work group and making a program of work for the day.

My work involves maintenance of the cultural collection- working specifically in the garden of health and the economic garden. 

Suppose a student was considering a career in your industry. What would you advise them to study? Are there any soft skills that would be beneficial for them to develop? Should they pursue any sort of work experience?  

I would suggest the Certificate III in Hoirticulture is a great place to start and the Diploma can be helpful for pursuing further career goals as well.

What do you love most about your job? What kind of tasks do you enjoy doing the most?

I love being in contact with the plants and seeing them grow up healthily.

I love working in a natural healthy environment.

Which three pieces of advice would you give to a current TAFE SA student?

  • Horticulture work is physical so listen to your body 
  • Within the possibilities of your job role- lets try and keep the city green- avoid cutting down our important trees and taking out native plants 
  • Make the most of all the learning opportunities in your study year(s)
